Giulia Farnese, the famous Roman beauty, who was known as the Venus of the Vatican, the mistress of Alexander VI. Through her influence with Alexander she laid the foundations of her family's great wealth and power. Her brother, Alexander Farnese, was made cardinal by Alexander VI, and afterward became pope as Paul III (1534-1549). After Alexander's death her picture served as a model for the figure of justice, now close to the high altar of St. Peter's and part of the monument erected to the memory of Pope Paul III.
